Introduction
So my dad calls me one day. He and my uncle run a tent and party rental company, and he had a problem with missed calls. The crew would be out delivering and setting up, and the phone kept ringing. He goes, "Connor, how do we use these AI voice companies?" Then, "I see them. I wanna test them."
So I looked at them. They were all pretty trash back then. Over time they got a little better, then better again. So I was like, fine, let me start building this.
None of this was new to me. I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, and the line I heard from them my whole life was "I wish I had more time." Right behind it came wishing for a little more money and for someone to help out. And most of the time they couldn't hire that someone, because a small business doesn't have big margins. So if you answer your own business phone, and you're the one on the job when it rings, this book is for you. You're one person with one phone, and the phone doesn't wait for you to finish the job.
So that's where the title comes from. A caller who gets no answer is a paying customer turning around at your door, and you never even see them go. The book comes in two parts. Part One is the phone itself: what a missed call costs you, the fixes that cost nothing, calling people back before they call somebody else, and counting your calls every week. Most of it you can do without buying anything. Part Two is AI and automation. It covers what you can hand off and what should stay in your own hands, and it ends on the ground rules for putting AI on your phone line.
Let me tell you what building all of this did to my own work. Jobs I used to hand to a team, I now run alone. These days my business runs mostly on systems I set up, and every so often one of them surprises me by still working. But even with all of it running, I still want to talk to my customers. People want a person on the other end when it counts. A big part of this book is figuring out which calls need you and which ones don't.
Anyways, grab your phone before you start. You're going to want last week's call log for Chapter 1.
